For those of you who
are introducing 4-H community mapping project exhibits at more than 50
county and state fairs in 2007, we thank you for helping to add this new
project to the 4-H fair tradition. We encourage others to work with your
fairs in the coming year to give the same opportunity to your 4-H
community mappers in 2008.
We have been working
with our friends at National Geographic Society and their state
Geography Alliance members to provide local support to this effort.
National Geographic is providing special My Wonderful World/4-H ribbons
to the 2007 participating fairs to recognize our 4-H community mapping
pioneers.
Many of you have
contacted Alliance members to help with the judging of these projects,
using the evaluation criteria developed by members of the National 4-H
GIS/GPS team. I had the opportunity to meet with several of them during
a recent meeting at National Geographic, and they are looking forward to
this new experience.
Since Geography
Alliance members are often new to 4-H and fair judging, they will
probably appreciate receiving judging information prior to the fair. The
map evaluation criteria (a copy of the current version is attached),
explanation of your fair judging and scoring process and a list of
classes that they will judge are several items that will help them to be
familiar with your fair judging. Be sure to take advantage of their
expertise by providing an opportunity for them to give verbal or written
feedback to the members on their mapping projects.
We appreciate that
you, National Geographic and the Geography Alliance are fostering the
development of 4-H GIS community mapping projects in your county and
state 4-H program.
